The idea for The Layover EP originally came about while he was on tour with Little Brother. It was originally going to be a 5 track release produced entirely by North Carolina producer Khrysis for free download. He later decided to up the ante and make it an official release. Evidence cites Ice Cube's Kill at Will, Pete Rock & CL Smooth's All Souled Out and Bone Thugs-n-Harmony's Creepin on ah Come Up as influences for the project, mini LP's that served an eager fan base with enduring, concentrated, filler-free product. DJ Premier ranked the album 2nd in his top 20 albums of 2008 list. In the video for "The Far Left" when The Alchemist says "To the atmosphere so I can really find out" he holds up a drawing of a slug and an ant. This is a reference to the hip hop group Atmosphere, which consist of rapper Slug and producer Ant.

Big Shug (born Cary Guy) is a hip hop artist from Boston, Massachusetts, and a member of the Gang Starr Foundation collective. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Guy spent much of his early life in Boston's Mattapan area (known locally as "Murdapan"). Growing up, he forged a friendship with future Gang Starr MC, Guru. The two were separated when Shug was imprisoned and Guru moved to New York, forming Gang Starr with DJ Premier. On his release, Shug again hooked up with Guru, joined the Gang Starr Foundation, and contributed to each of Gang Starr's albums, beginning with Hard to Earn in 1994 (on "F.A.L.A."). He also appeared on "The Militia" from 1998's Moment of Truth, and contributed to Guru's "Jazzmatazz" albums. During the 1990s, Shug recorded a few 12-inch singles produced by DJ Premier for Payday and Chrysalis, but his first proper solo album, Who's Hard was not released until 2005 and half of the songs were handled by DJ Premier. He signed to New York's Babygrande in 2007, and released his second album, Streetchamp. The album was produced by MoSS and DJ Premier and features guest appearances from DJ Premier and Sean Price. A third solo album, Otherside of the Game, was released in November 2008, and features DJ Premier, Bumpy Knuckles, Billy Danze of M.O.P., Termanology, Blaq Poet, and Singapore Kane. He performed at the 2009 Boston hemp fest. He is featured on the single "Tap Out", which appears on M-Dot & DJ Jean Maron's 2010 album Run MPC. In 2010 he also collaborated with (artist) Aztech and (producer) Reel Drama on their album Hybrid Genetics. In 2010 he collaborated with Omega Red song tiltled "Unexpected" for The RedTape Vol.3 Mixtape. In 2010 he collaborated with west coast hip hop artist Spinz on a song called "Round Tha World" that was recorded while touring Europe.

Jacob Dutton, better known as Jake One, is an American hip hop record producer from Seattle, Washington. Dutton grew up in Capitol Hill and moved to the North End of Seattle when he was 15. He started making music on a Casio keyboard in 1992. He attended the University of Washington and gave a tape of his music to a friend who worked in a local record store. One of the store's other employees, the DJ Mr. Supreme heard the tape, and when he set up his Conception Records label, he used Dutton to create backing tracks. The first record he produced was Eclipse's "World Premier". His early influences included Pete Rock, Dr. Dre, DJ Premier, and Marley Marl.

Byron Simpson, better known by his stage name Guilty Simpson is a rapper from Detroit, Michigan. He is also known for being a favorite of the late producer J Dilla. His debut album, Ode to the Ghetto includes production from J Dilla, as well as other frequent collaborators Madlib and Black Milk. Along with Sean Price, Guilty Simpson and Black Milk form the rap trio Random Axe. Simpson is also affiliated with the Detroit hip hop collective Almighty Dreadnaughtz. Ode to the Ghetto is the debut solo album by American MC Guilty Simpson, released on Stones Throw Records. While making many guest appearances on albums by fellow Detroit rappers and producers, Guilty has had to wait years for his own solo album to come together. Production on the album is handled by many Stones Throw producers, Detroit producers Denaun Porter, of D12,and Konnie Ross of Almighty Dreadnaughtz, as well as Los Angeles producer DJ Babu of Dilated Peoples.

Michael Perretta, better known as Evidence (born December 10, 1976 in Los Angeles, California), is an American hip hop artist, producer, and member of the rap group Dilated Peoples. Evidence is a native of Venice in Los Angeles, California and was born to an Italian father and a Russian-American mother. Before becoming a rapper and producer, Evidence was a graffiti artist. Evidence's affinity for hip-hop and the culture began in the early eighties, with his parents' divorce and subsequent move from the affluent city of Santa Monica to neighboring Venice Beach. By the early 1990s, and in addition to becoming a graffiti artist, painting hip hop inspired hieroglyphics under the name "VANE," a move next door to QD3, son of producer Quincy Jones, Evidence discovered his true calling. QD3, an accomplished West Coast producer, ("To Live and Die in L.A."- Tupac, "Ghetto Bird"- Ice Cube, "I Got the Knack"- Everlast) became one of Evidence's major influences in his pursuit to create music. "At night I would hear a loud thumping coming from the back yard next door and it wouldn't stop until early in the morning” says Evidence recalling those early days. “I could tell that they weren't just playing music but sounded like music was being created."

Bliss n Eso are an ARIA award winning Australian hip hop group based in Sydney, and were originally known as Bliss n' Esoterikizm. They are currently signed to Melbourne record label Illusive Sounds. Track "The Sea is Rising" is from their third album named Flying Colours released in 2008. The album was recorded in three different continents over twelve months, and features Illmaculate (World freestyle and Scribble Jam champion), a 20 piece African Zulu Choir (The Zulu Connections Choir), Debaser (US), Hyjak and Phrase.

This time we´re on with nice 2008 remake of KRS-One's classic track "Criminal Minded" produced by DJ Premier. Criminal Minded by Boogie Down Productions is a highly influental hip-hop album. Production on the LP is credited to 'Blastmaster' KRS-One (Lawrence Krisna Parker) and DJ Scott La Rock (Scott Sterling), but in future interviews it has been revealed that an uncredited Ced-Gee (Cedric Miller) of The Ultramagnetic MCs had a key role in crafting the sound of the LP. Released in early 1987, the album heavily sampled records from James Brown and AC/DC, and also flaunted a dancehall reggae influence. The songs “South Bronx” and “The Bridge is Over” (a reference to the Queensbridge Housing Projects) ignited a famous rivalry with the Queens-bred emcee MC Shan. The album is also credited with providing a prototype for East Coast gangsta rap from which to develop. For instance, the cover, which showcases Parker and Sterling surrounded by an arsenal of weapons, was hip-hop’s first major release to feature members brandishing firearms.
